Reviewed planning guidance

HomeProjects.money editorial team reviewed this page on 6 August 2026. HomeProjects.money is an independent planning tool, not a contractor, surveyor or building-control body. Listed sources inform the context and checking process; calculator ranges remain editorial planning assumptions that must be tested against written local quotes.

Planning assumptions

What the fence installation estimate includes

Posts, panels or rails, concrete, standard labour and basic disposal. A fence budget is driven by installed length, height, post spacing, ground conditions, gates and the treatment of the existing boundary. Measure changes in level and identify trees, retaining walls, utilities and restricted access before requesting prices.

Material and construction

Close-board timber, panels, vinyl, composite, chain-link and metal systems use different posts, foundations, fixings and maintenance regimes. Specify the complete system, not only the visible infill.

Ground and boundary conditions

Rock, roots, made ground, slopes and retaining conditions can slow excavation or require engineered work. Boundary ownership should be resolved before installation.

Gates, corners and access

Every gate, return, corner and change of level increases setting-out and hardware work. Narrow access may prevent normal excavation or material-handling equipment.

Scope decisions

Choose the right specification before requesting quotes

Cost comparisons are useful only when every contractor prices the same performance, preparation and finishing requirements.

Treated timber

A flexible, repairable option where periodic staining and replacement of weathered components is acceptable.

Vinyl or composite

Lower routine maintenance, but product quality, expansion details, colour stability and replacement-part availability matter.

Metal or chain-link

Useful for durability, security or long boundaries; coating, corrosion exposure and privacy requirements affect the specification.

Country requirements

Check the rules that apply where the work takes place

The calculator never mixes UK and US prices. The guidance below also follows the selected country; local authorities and code officials remain the definitive source.

UK Planning & Building Regulations

Fences adjacent to a highway used by vehicles generally require planning permission if exceeding 1 metre in height. Other garden boundary fences can be up to 2 metres under Permitted Development in the UK.

Common questions

Fence installation planning FAQ

Why can two fences of equal length cost differently?

Height, post system, material, gates, corners, slope, excavation and access can change labour and material quantities substantially.

Is old-fence removal included?

Only when selected as an allowance. Quotes should state dismantling, concrete removal, haulage and disposal separately.

Does choosing a city create a city-specific rate?

No. The current estimator applies a state or UK-region planning factor; the city identifies the market in which local quotes should be obtained.
