Reviewed planning guidance

HomeProjects.money editorial team reviewed this page on 6 August 2026. HomeProjects.money is an independent planning tool, not a contractor, surveyor or building-control body. Listed sources inform the context and checking process; calculator ranges remain editorial planning assumptions that must be tested against written local quotes.

Planning assumptions

What the replacement windows estimate includes

Removal, supply, installation, basic trim work and disposal. Window quotations vary because the opening, frame, glazing and finishing work are priced together. Count every opening separately and record whether it is fixed, opening, a bay, a door-height unit or difficult to reach before comparing installers.

Frame and glazing specification

uPVC or vinyl is normally the starting point. Timber, aluminium, composite frames, triple glazing, acoustic glass and specialist safety glass can materially change both supply cost and installation time.

Opening condition

Rotten timber, damaged lintels, failed damp detailing or out-of-square openings create work that a simple per-window allowance cannot predict. Ask whether making good is included.

Access and internal finishes

Upper floors, scaffolding, shutters, blinds, tiled reveals and decorated finishes can add labour. Confirm who repairs plaster, trim and paint after the frame is fitted.

Scope decisions

Choose the right specification before requesting quotes

Cost comparisons are useful only when every contractor prices the same performance, preparation and finishing requirements.

Standard double glazing

Straightforward replacements where thermal performance, ventilation and security requirements can be met without specialist glass.

High-performance glazing

Homes exposed to cold, heat, noise or strong sun, provided the frame and installation detail support the specified performance.

Repair rather than replace

Sound frames with isolated hardware, seal or glazing failures. A competent inspection should establish whether repair is realistic.

Country requirements

Check the rules that apply where the work takes place

The calculator never mixes UK and US prices. The guidance below also follows the selected country; local authorities and code officials remain the definitive source.

UK Planning & Building Regulations

All replacement windows must comply with Building Regulations Part L (thermal efficiency) and Part F (trickle vents). Using a FENSA or CERTASS registered installer ensures automatic certification.

Common questions

Replacement windows planning FAQ

Should every window use the same allowance?

No. Size, opening type, frame material, glazing, floor level and making-good work should be recorded separately.

Does the estimate include structural repairs?

Only a normal installation allowance. Lintel, rot, water-damage or wall repairs require inspection and a written provisional or fixed price.

What makes two window quotes comparable?

They should specify equivalent frames, glass, ventilation, hardware, trim, access, disposal, certification and warranties.
