Reviewed planning guidance

HomeProjects.money editorial team reviewed this page on 6 August 2026. HomeProjects.money is an independent planning tool, not a contractor, surveyor or building-control body. Listed sources inform the context and checking process; calculator ranges remain editorial planning assumptions that must be tested against written local quotes.

Planning assumptions

What the solar panel system estimate includes

Panels, inverter, mounting, standard electrical work and installation before incentives. Solar pricing should be tied to an annual-energy objective, usable roof area, shading, electrical capacity and an itemised equipment design. A headline price per kilowatt does not describe production, export, storage or roof work.

Array design and production

Orientation, tilt, shade, climate and module layout affect annual generation. Ask for the assumptions and software report behind the forecast.

Roof and electrical condition

Covering life, structural capacity, access, service-panel capacity, earthing or grounding and cable routes may need work before installation.

Inverter, battery and controls

String, optimiser and microinverter designs have different monitoring and replacement implications. Batteries add controls, location, fire and backup-load decisions.

Scope decisions

Choose the right specification before requesting quotes

Cost comparisons are useful only when every contractor prices the same performance, preparation and finishing requirements.

Grid-connected solar only

The simplest system where daytime use and export arrangements provide acceptable value without backup power.

Solar with battery

Useful when time-of-use rates, backup needs or low daytime consumption justify added cost and replacement planning.

Roof-first preparation

Replace or repair a near-end-of-life roof before panels to avoid paying for removal and reinstallation later.

Country requirements

Check the rules that apply where the work takes place

The calculator never mixes UK and US prices. The guidance below also follows the selected country; local authorities and code officials remain the definitive source.

UK Planning & Building Regulations

Rooftop solar panels are Permitted Development in England and Wales provided they project no more than 200mm from the roof slope. Installers must be MCS accredited to enable Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) export payments.

Common questions

Solar panel system planning FAQ

Are incentives included in the range?

No. The calculator shows a pre-incentive planning range because programmes and eligibility can change.

Does a larger array always save more?

Not necessarily. Roof layout, shade, consumption profile, export value and electrical limits affect the useful size.

Is battery replacement included?

No. Compare expected life, warranty throughput, replacement access and future cost separately.
